Led by AADS faculty members – the sociologist Dr. Hewan Girma and ethnomusicologist Dr. David Aarons – a group of AADS students and recent alumni explored the rich history and cultures of Zanzibar, Tanzania, and the Swahili coast. They visited Zanzibar’s Spice Farm, learned to cook Swahili cuisine from local women, visited the Old East African Slave Market Memorial, took a trip to mainland Tanzania, learned conversational Swahili, and much more. The trip, jointly sponsored by Lloyd International Honors College and the AADS program, in collaboration with the Ethiopian, East African, and Indian Ocean Research Network, will be expanded in future years while maintaining affordability for students to experience this high-impact experiential learning study abroad opportunity.
